Common Workbee build issues

I will hopefully be taking delivery of my 1000 x 1000 workbee in early May. After reading quite a few posts on various forums, it looks like there are certain areas of the build that may cause confusion and problems.

Generally most agree that the instructions supplied are very good but As with all things they are not perfectly suited to all people and misunderstandings can lead to mistakes.

Calling on the vast experience of some forum ‘veterans’, are there any problems that seem to crop up more frequently. A watch out for list would be great.

Cannot access Duet Webcontrol but can ping from Windows 10 computer

Hi Ooznest. I recently followed this guide to set up a direct ethernet connection between a Windows 10 computer and my WorkBee:

2. Connecting your Duet to a Network - Ethernet

Unfortunately, at the end of the configuration I cannot access Webcontrol via the IP address. However, using command prompt I can successfully ping the WorkBee at the fixed IP address I assigned. I’ve been using YAT to try and debug, and all standard commands seem to return sensible values (M21, M503, M552, M554, M553, M503).

I have tried disabling the Windows 10 firewall and turning on various sharing options for the local intranet. I’ve tried accessing the web control from both MS Edge and Google Chrome. I’ve tried disabling IPV6. I am currently using a standard ethernet cable (not a crossover) since the computer is relatively new (if it matters, the driver for the ethernet adapter is listed as Qualcomm Atheros r8172/8176). I am running wifi as well, but set up the (wired ethernet) on a different subnet as the guide above shows.

So all in all, I’m confused why the pinging works but I cannot access the web control from a browser. Any tips much appreciated, and of course I’d be happy to post more output from YAT or enter into discussion to help resolve the issue.

X axis grinding noise and won't move

I've just finished building my 1500x1500 workbee. I was trying to surface the spoilboard for the first time today and it was all going fine for a while, but about 3/4 of the way through the operation it started making a horrible grinding noise and ground to a halt.

The issue seems to relate to the X axis. When I loosened the nut blocks and clamping collars and took the tension out of the screw, it moved freely and I was able to home the machine (which i guess means it's probably not wiring related?), but when I re-tensioned the screw it started grinding again and struggling to move. I've opened up the box and couldn't see any obvious disconnected wiring. Any other suggestions? I haven't lubed the machine yet, could that be the problem or should I be looking for something else? Any thoughts? Thanks

Fastest Reliable Feeds & Speeds - Oak

I'm looking to add a second CNC to my workshop, but the one I'm currently using is out of production and their newer machines are significantly more expensive.

I'd also like to buy UK made where possible, so I'm looking at ooznest, having initially seen it at the show in Harrogate a week ago.

My question relates to how fast the WorkBee can be run and still produce reliable pocketing cuts with Oak.

I'm currently running parts that take around 40-50 minutes each, so time is an important factor. Many of the toolpaths are running at 5,000 mm/min with a 6mm end mill, 3mm step over and a 1.75mm deep cut.

Can the WorkBee reliably run at these speeds with Oak?
measurement difference between Vcarve / gcode file and final job

Hi,

I recently bought a 1500x1500 Workbee and installed it. No problem with the installation part and with the first few trials.

But I'm now having issues between the file I'm creating and the CNC work that comes out of it. I'm basically creating a pill shape of 41 x 133mm overall size on Vcarve that I would like to use to make a hollow pill shape on a piece of MDF. I'm turning this vector line into a pocket toolpath and I also tried a profil toolpath but the final job is always smaller than the file.

The pill shape I create on the software is 41mm wide by 113mm long but the final job is always 38mm wide by 111mm long :

I'm certain I specified a 1/4 inch end mill in the sofwtware which matches what is mounted on my milling machine

I'm certain I created the file right, I checked multpile times the toolpath dimensions

Could it come from the fact that the machine is loose for example ? Like the wheels who would not be tight enough or the X / Y / Z Lead-Screw being loose ?

Am I forgetting something else ?

Thanks for your help

Workbee not executing code correctly

Hi,

When I program and export G code from Vectric V carve Pro and upload it to the Workbee, sometimes it does not execute the code correctly. It only executes random X or Y movement within the programmed code, but not everything...

It happens seemingly random and it happens most with the Pocket function, but I have it happen with Profile aswel.

Sometimes changing the starting place fixes it, but not always.

Dustshoe messing things up!

Hi, i have a 750 x 750 Z1+ and as said in the title, my dustshoe is messing with my projects. I saw it when i first surfaced the spoilerboard, it took me a few minutes to identify it being the pr**k. On the edges, on the 2nd surfacing, when the router was starting to move, there was smooth little bumps in raster mode (on Vcarve).

Whenever there's a change in direction (on the X and Y axis), the hairs on the dustshoe goes from dusting in one direction to dusting in the other, slightly lifting the router assembly in the process. In the picture attached you can clearly see the difference between a cut with the dustshoe (on the left) and a cut without one (on the right).

There's no obvious slack on any axis, the only thing i can see having an influence is on the Z axis, i can lift and lower the router asembly by the amount of flex there's in the flexible coupler. I can move it a little and see the spring expanding and compressing. But as it doesn't cause any issue when the dustshoe is off, i don't think that's really a problem.

I can and had, eliminate this problem when i need to surface entirely a piece that is smaller than the 520 x 520 work space of my workbee, i make the surfacing starts outside of the piece allowing the hairs of the dustshoe to change direction, well, outside of the piece. But when in carve pockets, i can't do that...

So here's my question, is there any way to adress this problem or am i condemned to wait for my next house, where i'll have enough place to put my workbee in the enclosure and have it running without the dustshoe ?

Thanks !

Squaring of the X-Gantry - gap at one side

Original WorkBee Z1+

I have completed all steps in the assembly up to and including 6. Y-Gantry Assembly, step 5. Problem is I have noticed a 3mm gap between the Y-plate assembly and the base frame as the gantry is pushed as far as it can go to the front and to the back. When the gantry is at the front this gap is on the left and when at the back it moves to the right. I have tried loosening and retightening everything on the gantry while in place countless times. I have taken the gantry off to see if I could find a problem with the gantry or the base but I can’t find anything wrong. I have now reassembled everything again and have the same 3mm gap. It seems like something (I was thinking the base) is not square but I have checked for square when putting the base together and it was fine, I rechecked when I took it all apart and it was still good.

There is also no binding when moving the gantry, it moves freely along the whole length front to back.

I can close the gap with mild force but it springs back when released. I could maybe shim something but obviously this is not the ideal solution.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is/what to look for/what to adjust? I have attached a pic of the gap, the opposite side with no gap and then the whole setup.

Change pause / cancel behaviour

Hi!

I find myself doing a fair bit of experimenting on the machine, for example sneaking up on the right dimension for a hole.

This means that i tend to cancel jobs a lot, then upload a new version of the file and restart. As I have the large machine, this always takes a few minutes, because the machine goes back to the home position on pause/cancel.

Is there a way to change this behaviour? I’d love if I could overwrite the behaviour to only home z on pause/cancel.

Internally, it looks like duet runs pause.g/cancel.g, so if it’s possible to overwrite those, I figure that would solve the problem.

I checked the config.g and it does contain the M453 line, not commented out.

Is the config file read and applied at power up or how do I get it to change to CNC mode.
