RepRap limitations with CAM

Hi,

I’ve had my workbee duet for several months now and have started to understand the core concepts surrounding CNC control and its GCode. I’ve come across many different GCode related issues while using a smattering of CAM software. The main issues being the lack of G94 support (Okay not a huge deal to go in and change, but its annoying that something so core to CNC specific GCode is not supported), Canned cycle drilling understandably isnt supported in non-professional GRBL machines either but does make post processing of GCode a massive pain it aught not to be.

I might be way off the mark with my observations (I'm lightyears away from even considering myself any good at using my workbee, Heck it took me years and 3 custom 3D printer builds to fully understand its concepts) but I suppose my question is ; Why choose a firmware and controller not optimised to support the majority of GCode being output from CAM packages? and would a GRBL controller be a more "hassle free" experience.

Thanks in advance for any insight into this

How do I set the dimensions of the workbee (default is 750x750)?

Having built the workbee and successfully verified limit switches etc - when I hit Work Zero, the machine goes to it’s zero point - but it’s at ~250 on the Y axis. A manual nudge of Y-1 gives an out of machine limit message - the machine positions are all zero - so it is obviously set for a 750x750 machine.

Can’t find anything in the install guides or the WorkBee console that says how to set the dimensions of the machine.

FWIW - I can see the Y size in homey.g and several other files … but I’d expect something this common to be more accessible / documented / in one place .. and it would be useful to know the actual value to use instead of ‘520’ .. I’m guessing it’s 770 based on dimensions

Weird z-axis issue when repeating a job

Hi all,

I am very new to CNC and to Workbee in particular. I have just noticed a weird issue. (maybe not so weird, you tell me).

I have run a job, which consists of two elliptical pockets going the whole depth of the material (20mm). The depth is cut in multiple passes, 2mm at a time. The cutting bit is 1/4’’ upcut flat, two flute one. The material is soft-ish wood (pine I think).

The first time the job ran, everything was fine, pockets were cut just right and the spoilboard was untouched - precisely as designed. Then I repeated the job on another piece of material - without modifying the work zero position in any way. This time around, the first pocket of the two was correct, but on another one, the bit cut more than 0.5mm into the spoilboard. At the end, the job finished ok (after all, the spoilboard is there to be spoiled), but this has me wondering about the precision of the z-axis. I believe I might have heared a weird noise during the last pass, as if the bit hit something, or something skipped in the works of the machine. But I am not sure, perhaps I am imagining things. I don’t think the spoilboard deflected or moved upwards during the cut, so I have non idea what could be wrong.

Perhaps anybody has some idea what could be happening?

XYZ probe programming difficulties

Hello,

I purchased the Workbee 1010 screw driven from openbuilds, but am using the duet to control it as I like it more. the problem i am running into is with the XYZ probe they sell and the programming. I’ve had to write some Macros for the probing as it seems when you press the ones on the machine control page they rewrite the macro in the system file.

My custom macro for the Z probe is

; This Macro will find the z offset to the workpiece

M400

G91

M563 P999 S"XYZ-Probe"

T999

G1 Z5 f500

G1 X17 Y17 f500

M585 Z15 E4 L1 F500 S1

T-1

G10 L20 Z9

G1 Z5 F500

M500

G90

M563 P999 D-1 H-1

M291 P"Probe complete. Please remove probe." R"Success" S1

The problem is that no matter what I set M563 Lnnn to it never changes. I have changed the probe sensor to E4 correctly and tested it by holding it to the bit during the move and it when i remove it during the probing stages it works correctly, and I’ve also tried adding the line

M574 E4 S1 ; Set active high endstop

to make sure the E4 was defined, which I know is probably overkill. Do you have any suggestions?

Update (11/25/2020)

One more thing I discovered, when you go into the machine setting for the probe to set the custom size and offset of the probe, along with if it is triggered when High or Low. This setting doesn’t work either it seems, the probe.g file does change the Lnnn for the M585 command but doesn’t change how it operates.
