Fastest Reliable Feeds & Speeds - Oak

I'm looking to add a second CNC to my workshop, but the one I'm currently using is out of production and their newer machines are significantly more expensive.

I'd also like to buy UK made where possible, so I'm looking at ooznest, having initially seen it at the show in Harrogate a week ago.

My question relates to how fast the WorkBee can be run and still produce reliable pocketing cuts with Oak.

I'm currently running parts that take around 40-50 minutes each, so time is an important factor. Many of the toolpaths are running at 5,000 mm/min with a 6mm end mill, 3mm step over and a 1.75mm deep cut.

Can the WorkBee reliably run at these speeds with Oak? If not, what sort sort of speeds could I reasonably expect?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi David,

It was good to meet you at the show, and glad to hear you are interested in a WorkBee Z1+

The maximum speed the WorkBee can do is 2500mm/min, I would suggest a pass depth of 1-1.5mm. This will mean the job will take a bit longer than your current machine.

I hope this helps, if you have anymore questions do let us know.

Thanks.

Comments:

Hi Kimberley, Are these speeds and depth of cut considering 12 kgf stepper motors?

If the motors are replaced by 18 kgf stepper motors, could I cut deeper than 1.5 mm?

@fredsamarane The motors used on the WorkBee CNC Machine are NEMA23 175oz 2.8A. This model of motor is chosen for our machine because they offer a suitable amount of torque at all RPM ranges, which delivers optimum performance of the machine.

As the WorkBee uses ACME Lead Screws, the motors will always be running at high RPM, even at slow speeds, hence why the 175oz 2.8A model has been chosen as the most suitable option for the machine to perform. Based on this, we would not recommend a bigger motor to cut deeper. Deeper cuts will also put strain on the end mills.
