I had the same problem that the bolt was too long. I used two spring washers, in effect to shorten the bolt from 25mm.
I had the same issue as Tomasz with the lead screw protruding beyond the surface. A hole in the large face of the reference tool, so the protruding screw would not interfere with the reference tool, would be sufficient to make it work as described.
