Best workflow for relief carving

Hi - I was just wondering if anyone could advise - my current workflow in Carveco & 1.5m workbee is:

Rough pass with 6mm square bit

Finishing pass with 2.5 mm round bit (anything smaller broke)

Is it best to do these two passes or more?

Am I using the right toolls eg should I use round end for roughing then maybe v bit for finishing?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi Robert,

Your workflow is solid! Roughing with a flat endmill and finishing with a ball-end is standard. If you want more detail, consider adding extra finishing passes with gradually smaller ball-end bits. Avoid v-bits for finishing as they’re meant for engraving. Instead, look into tapered ball-end mills, they’re stronger and great for fine detail without breaking easily.

If you're finding smaller bits are breaking, consider adding an intermediate finishing pass with a slightly larger ball-end bit (e.g., 4mm). That way, the final small bit only needs to handle the fine detail, not heavier cleanup, which can cause breakage.

Hope that helps refine your process! Let us know if you anything else.
