Computer specification advice needed

Workbee ordered.

I have a fairly high spec, expensive, laptop for running cad/cam etc but don’t like the idea of travelling back and forth to my garage with it. Aside from the moving around, I am not happy at exposing it to the dusty environment in there. So would like to setup a cheaper system that can stay in the garage dedicated to the workbee just for gcode files etc. Any advice on minimum specs.

Hi Tezza,

I have a similar situation so I use a really old (2008 I think) Macbook running Linux and Firefox to access my machine and it works really well. I think anything that can run a “modern” browser works OK from what I’ve seen.

Cheers,

Rich.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that aside from the cad/cam side of things the pc requirements for the duet controller are not very demanding. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something before buying a cheap laptop/pc.

Hi Tezza,

If just to run WorkBee Control. Anything really which can run a Chrome web browser. A cheap android tablet would be a nice setup.

I am also concerned about dust on my laptop so would a tablet with Android 9 Pie with 32GB be sufficient ?

Thanks

Also just realised I am working the ethernet version - so will this run from a tablet?

Thanks again

@jamesofcork I am afraid not. You will need a device with an Ethernet port, or USB Port to use an adaptor

Hello!

I picked up a 500x500mm Ooznest OX and am about to set it up...

The OX uses an old USB Printer interface but I plan to use a USB-C device adapter to run this CNC

Q: do you think any ChromeBook, Mac device or Android tablet with a USB-C port would suffice?

I suppose even using Bluetooth may also be an option if I can find a module to fit the USB Print port?

I'd rather not use my M3 Macbook Pro directly in such a messy environ, just use it for the Fusion CAD + CAM post processing to g-code

Thank you for any advice on a state-of-the-art approach to getting this OX running nicely!

I’m really a CNC noob, so please forgive the ignorance and omissions 😳
