End Mill Cut Depth

Another newbie question. Does the cut depth of an end mill have to be more than the thickness of the stock if I wish to cut right through the stock

For example, If I have a piece of stock say 18mm thick can I use say a 30mm long End Mill with shaft of 6mm and cutting diameter of 6 mm and a cut depth of say 10 mm.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your question, normally that is ok if the shank diameter matches the cut diameter. You just have to be a little careful if it is an up-cut bit as it will not be able to evacuate the chips to the top of the cut.
